Un font è l'insieme di caratteri accomunati da un certo stile grafico.
Ogni font è caratterizzato da una serie di glifi; lettere, numeri, punteggiatura,
simboli, icone, disegni, caratteri matematici, note musicali, segni geografici ...
rappresentanti i caratteri appartenenti ad un particolare insieme.Esistono tantissimi tipi di caratteri "fonts" suddivisi in categorie e famiglie in base
alla loro appartenenza : maiuscole, con grazie, senza grazie, e decorative.True Type Font (TTF) è il formato standard per utenti Windows (non compatibile con Mac),
Per la stampa professionale sono stati sviluppati anche altri tipi di carattere
gli utenti Mac, pur utilizzandolo, sono ancora legati al formato e Post Script (PS)
quali ad esempio AAT e OpenType che differiscono sostanzialmente sia da PS che da TTF.
Alcuni programmi (generalmente i programmi utilizzati per design dei caratteri) sono in grado
di convertire TTF per Mac in un formato TTF compatibile per Windows (e viceversa).

Windows Xp contiene un editor di caratteri personalizzati con il quale è possibile creare
fino a 6.400 caratteri univoci, esempio lettere speciali da utilizzare nella propria libreria.
Il programma eudcedit.exe si trova nella cartella di sistema \Windows\System32
L'applicazione consente di creare nuovi simboli, caratteri o lettere, a cui sarà assegnato un valore esadecimale.
Per lanciare il programma cliccare su Start > Esegui e digitare la parola eudcedit.
